About

Image title

National League of Junior Cotillions is a curriculum designed to give young people instruction and practice in the courtesies that make life more pleasant for them and those around them; to give them thorough training in standard ballroom dance; and to provide opportunities to practice and enjoy these skills at memorable parties, balls, dinners, and events, complete with decorations, refreshments, favors and prizes.

Junior Cotillion emphasizes etiquette, manners, and character education as well as dancing. The social and character education components of the program include rules of polite conversation, introductions, proper telephone courtesy, table manners, acknowledgments of gifts, receiving lines, participating in group settings, paying, and receiving compliments, sports etiquette, first impressions, dress code for all occasions, and manners in the home and public places. Other topics covered are the ethics involved in the areas of having honor, dignity, respect, honesty, fairness, a caring attitude, accountability, and citizenship.

Dress code for Classes: Ladies should wear age-appropriate dresses or skirts, and dress shoes. Gentlemen should wear khaki pants, dress shirts, and dress shoes. No open-toe or athletic shoes will be permitted.

Dress code for Balls: Ladies should wear age-appropriate, conservative semi-formal dresse. Gentlemen should wear khaki pants, dress shirts, bow ties, navy blazers, and dress shoes. Suits optional.

Program Curriculum

Classes are held throughout the fall approximately every month.  Studies have shown this to be an effective schedule for students to retain skills learned over a longer period of time. The classes combine hands on etiquette and dance training in a fun social environment. Refreshments will be served at all classes. Classes will be determined according to the school the student attends and the number of students enrolled from each school.  Times offered for the classes will be dependent upon enrollment. A detailed schedule including date, day and time of class will be mailed in late July.

Etiquette booklets are given to students to take home after the first class.  Students are assigned a “Cotillion Challenge” which allows them to practice the skills they have learned in class.  These booklets are to be brought to class but not to the balls.  Students have to opportunity to earn prizes for completing their assignments.

Instructional Dinners- Dining etiquette and table manners are extremely important aspects of the Junior Cotillion training.  The fifth-grade program provides a three-course tutorial meal to discuss basic table manners and dining etiquette.  Proper use of napkins, utensils, silverware positions and more will be covered.  The sixth grade focuses on formal dining etiquette and place settings.  A five-course tutorial meal will be orchestrated prior to the formal Ball at the end of the season.  This meal is complete with place cards, menu cards, honored guest table, fingerbowls and more.  Students are given careful, individual attention and instruction as each course is served.

Fifties Sock Hop - This will be a fun dance to end the cotillion season.  “Fifties” style dances will be taught, and the games and prizes will reflect this era.

Grand Ball allows students a formal environment to practice the etiquette and dance skills they have learned, and to enjoy the self-assurance that comes from knowing the proper manners to use.  The evening includes a five-course tutorial dinner, prizes, contests, dance cards, corsages, boutonnieres and other aspects of a formal yet fun age appropriate dance.

Parent’s Dip Into Dancing Class - Parents are invited to join   us for the last forty-five minutes of class four to learn basic dance steps with their child.  This event is a wonderful memorable event with each year providing new dance knowledge for the parents.
