What is Veterans Day?

It is an official United States federal holiday observed on November 11th to honor our military veterans, men and woman who served in the United States Armed Forces.  This is one of our country’s most patriotic days and is a great opportunity to thank the brave men and woman who have protected and defended our freedom.  They have made the selfless decision to stand up to protect our country, our families, and our rights and freedoms.  Some American workers and many students have Veterans Day off from work or school.

Flag Etiquette

  • The flag should be illuminated at all times, either by sunlight or by an appropriate light source.
  • The flag should only be flown in fair weather unless the flag is designed for inclement weather.
  • The flag should never have any mark, insignia, letter, word, number, figure, or drawing of any kind placed on it.
  • The flag should never be used for receiving, holding, carrying, or delivering anything.
  • When the flag is lowered no part of it should touch the ground or any other object.  It should be received by waiting hands and arms.
  • To store the flag, it should be folded neatly and in the correct manner.
  • The flag should be cleaned and mended when necessary.
  • Flying a flag at half-mast is a symbol of respect, mourning, or distress.
